3 Types of Dental Practices That Should NOT Invest in Dental Efficiency Coaching

Dental Efficiency Coaching isn't for every dental practice.
We believe virtually every dental practice has opportunities to become more efficient.
But just because a practice could become more efficient doesn't mean the owner has the motivation, need, or desire to make it happen.
And if you don't really want to change how your practice operates, you probably shouldn't spend money hiring someone to help you do it.
So, who isn't a good fit for Dental Efficiency Coaching? There are three types of practices we would tell to seriously consider keeping their money.
1. The "Lucky ZIP Code" Practice
Some dental practices operate in markets where the economics are simply in their favor.
They can command high fees, be highly selective about the dentistry they perform, maintain a relatively relaxed schedule, and still produce an extremely healthy profit.
We call these "lucky ZIP code" practices.
These practices can have plenty of inefficiency and still be financially successful.
Supplies might be scattered across the office. Team members may take twice as many steps as necessary. Sterilization may be poorly organized. Rooms may be inconsistent. The schedule may have enormous unused capacity.
But financially? Everything is fine.
If the owner is happy with the profitability, pace, and lifestyle the practice provides, there may be very little motivation to fix any of it.
If you already have the practice you want and don't care about increasing its capacity, Dental Efficiency Coaching may not provide enough value to justify the investment.
2. The "Retire-in-Practice" Dentist
Not every dentist wants to grow. Some are intentionally doing the opposite.
They're nearing retirement, reducing their schedule, seeing fewer patients, and gradually winding down the practice. They're not trying to add another operatory, increase production, build a larger team, or squeeze another decade of growth out of the business.
They're riding off into the sunset. Slowly.
If that's your plan, major improvements to your workflow may simply not be a priority.
Dental Efficiency Coaching requires you to look critically at how work gets done and make changes. If your goal is to maintain the status quo for another year or two before handing over the keys, that effort may not make sense.
Could we make the practice more efficient? Easily.
But if you don't need the additional capacity, don't want to change your systems, and aren't interested in improving the practice's long-term performance, why do it?
Go work on your golf game.
3. The "Hobby Practice"
Some dentists simply aren't trying to maximize the performance of their practice.
They may work two or three days per week. The practice may not be a significant source of household income. They enjoy dentistry, enjoy their patients, and want a business that supports a particular lifestyle.
Growth isn't the goal. Neither is maximum productivity.
Dental Efficiency Coaching is designed to improve the systems behind the dentistry: how treatment rooms are organized, how supplies move, how sterilization operates, how responsibilities are divided, how inventory is managed, and how the team gets work done.
Those changes create capacity. If you have no desire to use that capacity, there may be little reason to pursue it.
If you're happy with the way your practice runs and genuinely have no interest in producing more, reducing wasted time, creating additional capacity, or changing the way your team works, you probably don't need us.
What if my dental team is resistant to change?
We hear this all the time: “I know we need to change, but my team is going to fight me on it.”
Resistance to change is common in dental practices. It doesn’t mean coaching won’t work. In many cases, it’s one of the reasons coaching is needed.
Dental teams are trained to deliver dentistry. They typically aren’t trained to analyze workflow, eliminate wasted motion, or build standardized systems. Dentists usually weren’t taught these skills in dental school either.
Sometimes your team also needs to hear it from someone other than you. Our coaches understand what it’s like to work inside a dental practice and can help your team see why a change matters, how it will make their day easier, and how to put it into practice.
Resistance doesn’t disqualify your practice from coaching. It may be a sign your team needs help building a better system together.
The bigger problem is when the practice owner isn't willing to change. If leadership isn't committed to improving the systems everyone else is being asked to follow, coaching is unlikely to produce lasting results.
So, is Dental Efficiency Coaching right for your practice?
Start with one question: Do you actually want something to change?
If you're highly profitable, happy with your pace, and don't care about additional capacity, you may not need Dental Efficiency Coaching.
But if you're frustrated because your team is constantly searching, running behind, dealing with bottlenecks, or working harder than your production numbers suggest, that's different.
Dental Efficiency Coaching doesn't change the dentistry you perform. It changes how easily your practice allows you and your team to perform it.
